Punk'd

By N. Mulligan

Introduction

When is enough, enough? Abraham will do anything to please God, anything. Abraham even circumcises himself and almost kills his son, Isaac, to please God. Why? Just to keep a covenant and show his faith to God. Why doesn't Isaac have a say in all this? In my project for the conversation that never happened, I made the conversations that happened before and after this act of showing faith, and I gave Isaac a chance to speak his mind.

Dialogue

God: (loud and powerful) Abraham!
Abraham: (curious) Yes?
God: This is the LORD your God.
Abraham: Oh hey God, what's up?
God: Nothing much just ruling the world. I need you to kill your son.
Abraham: Uhhh am I being punk'd? wheres Ashton Kutcher?
God: No, if you want to prove your faith to me you must kill Isaac.
Abraham: But he's my favorite. What about one of the others?
God: No. It has to be Isaac.
Abraham: (like a toddler) But why?
God: To show your faith.
Abraham: But why?
God: Because.
Abraham: Because is not a answer.
God: Do you want a time out and 7 years of famine?
Abraham: No.
God: Than do it.
Abraham: Fine.
Narrator: Abraham and Isaac reach the top of the mountain.
Isaac: Hey pops, wheres the offering?
Abraham: Just don't worry about it. Get your things, we're leaving in five.
Isaac: *sigh* Alright. But really wheres the offering, we need to make sure its ready.
Abraham: I swear to God Iss-
God: yes?
Abraham: Sorry my bad God. its nothing.
God: Oh alright.
Issac: wheres the offering dad?
Abraham: its already up there...
Isaac: really?
Abraham: Yes.. now lets get on our way son.
Issac: Okay Cool lets do this.
Narrator: Abraham and Isaac reach the top of the mountain.
Isaac: Alright were here, now wheres the offering?
Abraham: It's just over that ridge. I'm going to tie you up now.
Isaac: Wha? Why?
Abraham: Just trust me kiddo. It's for your safety.
Isaac: No, this is just weird pops.
Abraham: (enraged) ARE YOU BACK TALKIN' ME?
Isaac: (timid) No sir. I'm sorry for questioning you.
Abraham: Thats more like it.
Isaac: For the record I dont like this, but you are my father and you know whats best for me, like when you circumsised me and said it was to please you God. Witch is really weird but I guess not as weird as this.
Abraham: Shut up now son.
Narrator: Abraham finishes tying up Isaac.
Abraham: There we go, all finished. Time to put you on the sacrifice altar.
Isaac: (muffled) WHAT?
Abraham: Sorry son. God has told me to sacrifice you, and I have to stay loyal to the LORD my god.
Isaac (muffled) NO!
Abraham: Nope. God knows whats best. It's for the greater good. I'm sorry son.
God: WAIT!
Abraham: (stunned) GOD?
God: Yes, it is I, the LORD your God. Stop all this nonsense. I can't believe you were going to do it! It's a little weird Abraham.
Abraham: But you told me to go that god. I trust your judgement about everything.
God: You need to start being a man and learn to say "no". like honesty. hes your son. you should be stoned or something.
Abraham: Not cool God.
God: Un-tie your son, Isaac, and go home, heres a ram for the offering.
Narrator: Abraham and Isaac start walking home.
Isaac: (angry) What was that all about dad! You were going to kill me? wow.
Abraham: God told me to.
Isaac: If God told you to jump off a bridge would you do that too?
Abraham: Uhhhh...yes...
Isaac: First you circumcise me, now you try to kill me? I'm calling child services.
Abraham: God told me to do that too.
Isaac: Dad, I trust you with everything I do. All I have done in my life time is to make you proud like when I won that bowling contest, and now you try to kill me. That's just harsh dad.
Abraham: God works in mysterious ways, Isaac. You have to trust what god says will turn out for the better. We have a covenant with him and I have to fallow his every command in order to keep the covenant alive.
Isaac: So you do all this crap for God and he gives you what? Nothing?
Abraham: Major coin homes.
Issac: Your 99 years old. You cant talk like us.
Abraham: What I'm hip yo. High five playa'
Issac: Stop your embarrassing me.
Abraham: Sorry. My bad.
Issac: You were honestly going to kill me?
Abraham: Well when a man and a woman love each other very much they-
Isaac: NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Don't go off on a different tangent.
Abraham: Sorry son.
Isaac: I'm out of here.

Dialogue Analysis

During the conversation, Isaac is told to do tasks that he knows is wrong but goes through with it because he is loyal. Isaac does not disagree with anything his father does and just fallows him submissively. Isaac has a feeling that the things being done are not good but he does not want to be disloyal: " For the record I dont like this, but you are my father and you know
whats best for me," (Mulligan). Isaac also puts too much trust into the more powerful people because he knows that he will have consequences if he disobeys Abraham. Isaac is portrayed as someone who knows somethings wrong, but does not have the courage to stand up for what he knows is wrong, which makes him submissive. Isaac knows of his upcoming fait, "There we go, all finished. Time to put you on the sacrifice altar." (Mulligan). But, Isaac will not confront his father out of fear and loyalty. Not only does Isaac have these traits, but so does Abraham. Abraham is loyal to God and will do anything to please God, "Sorry son. God has told me to sacrifice you, and I have to stay loyal to the LORD my god." (Mulligan). Isaac is Abraham's favorite son, and he will kill his favorite son to stay loyal and keep the covenant. Abraham believes in the covenant and the greater good so he will obey every command by God.

Character Analysis

Since Isaac is Loyal, he follows others submissively. In the ainting found on Insidecatholic.com, Isaac is tied up just before Abraham sacrifices him to show his faith to the Lord his God. This act represents his loyalty to a higher power, his father, by following through with whatever Abraham says. The act also makes him submissive because he just follows with the orders when he should be uncomfortable with the extreme demands. In the picture, Isaac is scared, but he is going through with the sacrifice because he is loyal to his father a

Isaac being blessed by Abraham
nd God: “He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the alter on top of the wood.” (Gen. 22.9) This quotation represents Isaac’s submissiveness because he does not have the power to say “no”. He is intimidated by a higher power. Intimidation is shown through out this story. During the story, Isaac never stands up for himself and tells Abraham he is uncomfortable, he just lets whatever happens, happens. This is not a good trait for Isaac if he wants to be fruitful and multiply.

Because Abraham is Loyal to God, he follows a higher power blindly. In the painting found on Insidecatholic.com, Abraham is about to kill his favorite son, Isaac, Making Abraham loyal to God’s commands. The knife on Isaacs throat represents how Abrahamabraham-face-starsjpg.jpg will go to extreme measures to satisfy Gods needs. This motif of satsfieing God’s demands shows up many times in the beginning times. The people want to follow someone because they crave a structured environment. God makes this environment because he is all-powerful and can change someone’s fait in a matter of seconds. The people of earth fear God so they can live a fruitful life. The people can only turn to God and make a covenant with him, like what Abraham did. God promises gold and riches for loyalty and followers. This is a good deal in early times, and the only deal they can make. Abraham is one of the people to be most successful for this covenant, but had to do some questionable acts to show his faith: “Take your son…and offer him there and a blunt offering” (Gen. 22.2). This demand is not God’s first radical demand, but the most significant. God wants Abraham to kill his son Isaac, just to show his faith and keep the covenant alive. Abraham needs to learn how to question a higher power, and be comfortable with questioning God’s dema nds.

Reflection

When I got this assignment, I immediately thought of the conversation between Abraham and Isaac because I remember seeing something on television about the same subject. In the beginning, I thought this assignment would be a simple, fun acting out kind of assignment, and I was completely wrong. This assignment took a very long time and was very stressful. The assignment was fun, but more stressful because it has a lot of parts to it and with all the other teachers trying to get last minute tests and projects in, it was hard to manage time and work on things that are most important. English took priority over everything, however, because this project counts for so much and is the most complex.

Writing the dialogue was a lot of fun because you got to make the character your own and have some comedy in the script. All of the other work was pretty stressful. On of the most stressful parts on my project was finding information for the artist because it took me over an hour to just find out the artists name. All of the other assignments were stressful but manageable.

I would recommend doing this project next year for the freshmen but I would have it be due earlier and started earlier because when your reading The Odyssey and you realize you have a Genesis project due, you mix up some of the characters and forget some of the important details. In conclusion, I thought this project was stressful, difficult, fun, new, and different. I would defiantly recommend assigning this project next year.
